Craig Bellamy: Wales hope their coach stays at Euro 2028 amid interest

The former Liverpool and Manchester City striker played 78 international matches with Wales and scored 19 goals, but did not represent his country in a major tournament.

This is a key factor in his desire to lead Wales to the 2026 World Cup, and he said that managing the national team at Euro 2028 on home soil is a “tremendous” motivator.

Wales will co-host the UEFA Euro 2028 alongside England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, with Cardiff Principality Stadium hosting the opening match.

“I was with him at the rugby match when Wales played the All Blacks [in November] “We are looking forward to the stadium together, thinking when we start Euro 2028 in this stadium, this will be another chapter for Welsh football,” Mooney said.

“So, as part of the legacy he wants to leave for Welsh football, we would like him to stay until Euro 2028 and lead the team.”

“He’s really excited about it. We live in the real world as well. If someone offers him, I don’t know, a Real Madrid job or a Barcelona job or a Liverpool job, whatever, that would naturally be interesting to anyone.”

“I mean he’s competitive, he’s been at the top of the game on the pitch, and of course off the pitch, he’ll want to get to the top.

“If he plays football like we did against North Macedonia [who Wales beat 7-1 in November] “Then any club that wants to play good football and wants a bright young coach, I would be surprised if he is not on their radar.”
