✅ Key idea:
Everything is bright
I thought All Is Bright was a real modern hidden gem starring Paul Rudd and Paul Giamatti as hapless Christmas tree salesmen. They played both perfectly, with Rudd playing not his usual “puppy dog everyone wants to be your buddy” role but a sarcastic one, complementing Giamatti’s Christmas laugh. It’s an excellent film, more of a black comedy (by Hollywood standards). And you will know me
8 bit christmas
It’s unabashedly nostalgic while being very funny for my eight- and nine-year-olds, but it still left me in floods of tears at the end. Stubborn12
Stopped
Stalled, an offbeat British comedy, takes place on the sidelines of an office Christmas party, when a plumber finds himself trapped in a toilet cubicle during a zombie apocalypse (where he remains for almost the entire film). It’s both witty and comedic. Instant launch
Ref
Rarely has an intelligent black comedy been as successful as a feel-good film. [Kevin] spacey, [Denis] Leary W [Judy] Davis are all at the top of their game, and [Ted] Demy’s directorial hand is subtle but steady. And a special tip of the hat to Richard Bright as the hilarious and instantly memorable Murray, Gus’s (Leary) incompetent partner in crime. com. gradeoneirony
Family man
[Nicolas] Cage in The Family Man is one of his most underrated films. Somewhat inspired by It’s a Wonderful Life, it manages to be honest and entertaining without falling into over-the-top sentimentality or melodrama. Sagarmatha 1953
Klaus
A beautiful (and traditional) animated Santa origin story from Sergio Pablos. Heartwarming and in messily funny places. It was released by Netflix, but seems to have gone criminally under the radar [in my opinion]. bluejay2011
Martian Christmas
It had just started appearing on Christmas afternoon on television in the early 1980s, when I was a young teenager. It’s like a low-budget Canadian ET full of snowy scenes, and very cute. (I always cry at the end, but then… TRUE Christmas begins!) andynewilg
Bad moms birthday
It wouldn’t be Christmas without my annual A Bad Moms Christmas movie starring Christine Baranski, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Susan Sarandon, and Mila Kunis getting so much screen time, I’m surprised it hasn’t been mentioned more often in these lists and reviews. Sweater
Comfort and joy
I’d nominate “Comfort and Joy,” in which a DJ takes on Christmas radio by getting involved in Glasgow’s ice cream wars, with all the usual offbeat Bill Forsyth, Larceny, Inc. charm. – Great little crime comedy starring Edward G. Robinson. Jackmoran
Some girls
A lovely underrated Christmas movie from the late 80s. Patrick Dempsey travels to Canada to spend Christmas with his girlfriend Jennifer Connelly and her eccentric family, only to hear upon arrival that she doesn’t love him anymore. Some great performances from then unknowns, plus Andre Gregory from My Dinner With Andre as the father. And some great Canadian winter scenery. Neuronyoc
Bernard and the Genie
Richard Curtis, Lenny Henry, Alan Cumming, Rowan Atkinson and a whole host of early 90s stars. Christmas doesn’t begin until a blooming elf puts me in a blooming lamp without a flowery farewell or leave. Oleiros
Remember the night
I suggest Remember the Night, a very adult film with Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray. Almost no one I know has seen it except those who really cherish it. Mississippi Miss
Salon bar
Saloon Bar is a brilliant piece of comedy, drama and thriller, set in an East End pub at Christmas and starring Gordon Harker (Inspector Hornley) and Mervyn Jones. Unlike EastEnders, it’s a good look into the spirit of London’s legendary working-class community. Instant launch
