Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo will travel to Spain to receive treatment for a hamstring injury that is “more serious” than initially thought.

The 41-year-old striker, who has scored 21 goals in 22 matches this season in the Saudi Professional League for leaders Al-Nassr, was substituted in the 3-1 win over Al-Fayha on Saturday.

He had missed a penalty kick earlier.

Speaking before the team’s match against NEOM on Saturday, Al-Nasr coach, Jorge Jesus, said that Ronaldo will visit Madrid where he “will need treatment from his physiotherapist.”

He added: “In the last match, Cristiano came out with a muscle injury. After the tests he underwent, it became clear that the injury was more serious than we expected.”

“He will need to rest and recover. We hope he will be back soon to help the team.”

It is unclear whether the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will be fit to play in Portugal’s friendlies against Mexico on March 29 and the United States on April 1.

Ronaldo, who scored 965 goals in his career, said he would not retire until he reached his thousandth goal.
