Republic of Ireland defender John Egan says Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side must “continue to excel” after a last-gasp win away to Hungary in November when they face the Czech Republic in a World Cup qualifying semi-final on Thursday. [19:45 GMT].

With a win necessary in Budapest, the Republic looked like they were on the verge of going through in stoppage time before Troy Parrott scored the winner that kept their hopes of qualifying for this summer’s tournament in North America alive.

After a disappointing defeat away to Armenia last September, which put their qualification hopes on the back burner, they turned things around as a memorable win secured second place in Group F.

“We knew we needed to win but we had a lot of confidence,” said the 33-year-old Egan, whose team will visit the Czech Republic before a potential home play-off against Denmark or North Macedonia next Tuesday.

“When we were 2-1 down, we still had the feeling we could get the win, and when Troy did what he did, it felt like you were in a movie.

“We have to continue to ride that wave and keep the confidence and positivity going.

“These tournaments don’t happen very often, so when you get a week like this, you have to accept it and do everything you can to get the result.”
