Welbeck also played a pivotal role in Brighton’s opener, as his driving pace and chipped cross led to Brajan Gruda’s goal after Jorginio Rutter’s shot on the goal line was blocked by Patrick Dorjo.

In scoring his goal in the 64th minute, the 42-cap England player showed the composure, skill and quality that United have often lacked since his departure.

His first touch took Gruda’s pass off his feet, while his second put the ball into the top left corner.

“I knew where the defenders were and I was saying: ‘I have to touch the ball and the second touch has to be a shot on goal,'” he told TNT Sports.

“It had to be a perfect touch, a little bit away from the defender. It was nice to get that clean contact.”

Since leaving Manchester and Arsenal and a spell at Watford, Welbeck has played an increasingly prominent role at Brighton, who he joined in 2020.

“He is best described as a role model on the pitch and, next to him, he is a great connection,” Seagulls manager Fabian Horzler said.

“He’s a great scorer, he’s there at the right moment. He missed a big chance but good scorers never give up, they’re always prepared.”

Jones was similarly impressed with his performance.

“Today was amazing,” the former England centre-back said.

“The way he handles himself, the way he carries himself, the way he lives his life properly and dedicates himself to football.

“For any young child watching, he epitomizes the way he goes about his business.”

Welbeck turned 35 last November, and this was his ninth goal of the season.

The 11 he scored in the 2024-25 season was the most since his breakout year at Old Trafford in 2012 when he scored 12 goals.

When asked about his longevity, he added: “I cannot reveal the secret.”
