Peterborough United sacked its coach, Darren Ferguson, after the team became bottom of the English Premier League standings.
Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Blackpool was the 53-year-old’s final game in the Posh dugout in his fourth spell at the helm of the club.
The Scot, the son of legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has led Peterborough to promotion on four occasions – and has also won the Premier League Cup in the past two seasons.
But they have won just three of their 13 matches so far this season as they have dropped to the bottom of the table.
Ferguson left five points behind Burton Albion, who are in 20th place and just outside the relegation zone.
“I have taken the decision to terminate Darren Ferguson’s contract after today’s match,” club chairman Darren McIntony said in a statement., external
“The decision was not made lightly, but it is a decision that I feel is the right one for the football club.
“The coach is for me the greatest coach in the club’s history and who I will always consider part of my family and the club family.
“There are too many wonderful moments to mention here, but those many historic moments I celebrated will be cherished and remembered forever.
“From Monday onwards, we start to recover and move forward.
“Goodbye legend and thank you!”
