Everton Coach David Moyes criticized the laws of the game after receiving a booking for entering the pitch to celebrate Beto’s last-gasp goal against his team. Brighton.
Beto came off the bench to score a 97th-minute equalizer on his 27th birthday, giving the Toffees a 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium.
The 63-year-old Scot was unable to control his emotions after grabbing the point, so he left his hiding place and ran onto the field, before referee Chris Kavanagh showed him a yellow card for leaving the technical area.
Moyes drew comparisons with David Pleat’s celebrations at Maine Road after his Luton side avoided relegation from the Championship on the final day of the 1982-83 season with victory over Manchester City.
“I hope you don’t call me Bléte in the future,” Moyes said after the match.
“The difference is that Plate has not been booked for it, they think it is okay and everyone is enjoying seeing the celebrations.
“We’re killing it. Coaches can’t go out of their technical area to celebrate a goal, or do things that give people away [the media] Lots to talk about.”
Asked if he would do it again, Moyes replied: “I would do it again!
“In fact, if I had been more mobile, I might have slipped the knee. That would have just gotten me a yellow card as well, so I might have been out of time.”
Earlier this season, former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was suspended for one match after receiving a second yellow card for leaving the technical area to celebrate with his players in their recent win over Liverpool.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner joked that he feared he would be suspended for last season’s FA Cup final after he cut short his celebration in the 3-0 semi-final win over Aston Villa.
