Davis Cup Finals: Italy beat Spain to win a historic third successive title

Both Italy and Spain reached the final despite missing key players, with the absence of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner depriving fans of a seventh meeting in 2025 between the world’s two dominant players.

But with Italy’s second seed, Lorenzo Musetti, out, Coppoli and Berrettini have had their moments in the spotlight with three wins from three singles matches each this week.

The crowd chanted Coboli’s name as he maintained his composure to seal his victory in Return to Love, having made the breakthrough in the 11th game of the tense deciding set.

This was not an easy matter, given his admission that he had achieved the “dream” of taking Italy to Sunday’s finals on home soil.

In contrast to what happened on Friday night, when Coppoli tore off his shirt to celebrate “one of the best days” of his life, the world number 22 paid the price for the slow start after losing a one-sided opening set.

But Copoli launched a necessary and immediate response after his fall at the beginning of the second half.

Copoli’s fortunes appeared to have changed after play was halted for nine minutes when a member of the crowd became unwell. When play resumed, with Munar having a break point, the Italian shot a shot that hit a lucky net and brought the penalty back level.

Despite being frustratingly denied four service points, Copoli seized control in the must-win tiebreak to force the deciding set – where he succeeded once again.
