“When I play for my country, I only think about trying to win the next point, trying to fight hard for my teammates, for everyone who is here and everyone watching from home,” Berrettini said.
“This is the biggest privilege. If I win that’s even better, but I try to enjoy being there every time. It’s very special.”
Kupoli, ranked 22nd in the world, followed his compatriot’s example with a crushing 6-1, 6-3 victory over first-seeded Austrian Filip Misulic.
Copoli (23 years old), who excelled by reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon this year, dominated the first set, which lasted only 30 minutes, with his serve broken three times.
He tightened his grip on the match at the beginning of the second set, breaking his opponent’s serve early and leading 3-0 before confidently making his way to victory.
Coppoli echoed his teammate’s sentiments in his post-match interview, saying: “We all want to win this cup and I felt the support from the bench, it was unbelievable.
“When I play for them, it’s something I can’t describe.”
