Sinner, a key member of the Italian squad that has won the past two editions, has opted to maximize his recovery during the sport’s brief six-week hiatus following his victory at the ATP Finals last week.
The presence of only one top 10 player in this year’s tournament has sparked debate about the future shape of the tournament.
But after Berrettini and Coppoli starred for Italy in their quarter-final match against Austria, both players spoke of how privileged they felt to be competing for their country in the finals.
Berrettini maintained the momentum he achieved after winning the first set, breaking his serve early and not faltering after leading 3-0.
The former Wimbledon runner-up, ranked 56 in the world, immediately broke her opponent’s serve in the second set after Collignon double-faulted twice.
However, his run slowed until the end when Collignon converted his first chance to level the score at 2-2 – and the Belgian was denied action for the fourth game in a row when Berrettini smashed a stunning forehand cross-court to prevent another break point two games later.
But Berrettini did not lose his grip on the competition after he reasserted himself with another break of serve, achieving his tenth consecutive victory in singles when playing for his country.
Speaking after the match, Berrettini said: “The pressure is a privilege. Obviously I feel the pressure, but you are playing against your country, my whole family is here, and we are all great friends in our team.”
“It’s a special feeling for me. I get rid of the bad feelings and just enjoy the moment.”
