Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool avoided a major scare to win the doubles and put Great Britain into the final round of the Davis Cup qualifiers with a 3-0 win over Norway.
Wimbledon champions Cash and Glasspool were favorites ahead of inexperienced pair Viktor Durasovich and Nikolai Budkov-Kjaer, who were ranked 491st and 1187th in doubles respectively.
The duo raced through the first set but completely lost their way in the second set in an entertaining encounter in Oslo.
Then Cash and Glasspool held on to eventually take the lead 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5).
After Cash served a winning serve to secure the win, he began to return to the baseline, where all players thought it was a 10-point tiebreaker.
However, the referee intervened to confirm that Britain had settled the best-of-five encounter at the earliest opportunity.
“It means the world,” Glasspool said of winning his first Davis Cup match.
“It was a little monkey on our backs and now we can free up a little bit and hopefully get more wins.”
Returnees Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie beat Durasovic and Budkov Kerr respectively in singles on Thursday to put Leon Smith’s side in a strong position.
Britain will face either Ecuador or Australia later in the year for a place in the eight-team finals in November.
