Derek McInnes: Hearts face ‘toughest challenge’ against Celtic, says coach

McInnes’ Aberdeen side finished runners-up to Celtic in the Scottish Cup and League Cup finals, as well as four Premier League appearances. At Kilmarnock, he enjoyed two victories over Brendan Rodgers’ side in the 2023-24 season, including a Premier League trophy.

“When you play against Celtic, you have to be on your toes and you have to play really well to get anything out of the game,” McInnes explained.

“I have played against Brendan’s teams quite often and he is a great manager and a great player. Celtic are full of great players. They spend money on the team because of the demand and they are a good, high-level player.

“So, we have hard work ahead of us on Sunday to get a result. All I’m focused on is trying to be their toughest opponent and making sure our performance gives us a chance. I can’t rely on any opponent, whether they are weak or strong.

“We believe we have the performance that can win the match.”

McInnes said a win and an eight-point lead “would be a good shot from us.”

“We could also be just two points ahead,” he added. “We know we only have eight or nine games after Sunday. If we can win, I think it will be great for the confidence and belief. If we don’t win, it won’t stop us and we will continue to try to believe and believe in our work moving forward.”

“There are a lot of people who would like to see some sort of opposition to the natural order while challenging the old company for the titles. There are also a lot of people who are a little jealous of us right now and would love to see us fail and fall to the ground.”
