Did Dundee United’s win leave four teams fighting to avoid a relegation play-off in the Scottish Premiership?

The weekend’s results will have caused some concern among Dundee and Aberdeen fans.

It is true that they had to travel to face the title rivals on Saturday, but their defeat, combined with the wins for St Mirren and Kilmarnock, made matters significantly more complicated.

A five-point stretch now extends what looks like a four-way battle to avoid a relegation play-off against one of the Championship teams, with Livingston 12 points adrift at the bottom.

Aberdeen next visit St Mirren – bringing new manager Steven Robinson back to the club he just left – and then host Hibernian. harsh?

Dundee will play at home against Celtic after the international break, then visit Kilmarnock before the breakaway. Harder?

St Mirren’s last game before the split is against Celtic in Glasgow, while Kilmarnock visit Hibs before that trip to Dundee. It’s not easy either.

There’s another layer to this as well.

Whether it is United or Falkirk, there will be an imbalance in the fixtures, as four of the bottom six teams will have played another home game while two of them have played another away game.

This would result in at least one team making a third trip to a given ground this season, something that could be difficult for the SPFL given what is at stake.
