✅ Main takeaway:

After starting four shots back, Lowry – who has not had an individual win since September 2022 – made back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes.

The former Open champion jumped into a share of the lead with five straight birdies from No. 11 before finally hitting a shot to move ahead of Nakajima.

“It’s not that hard when you hit the ball in play there, but when you start missing the fairways it gets really tough, so I’m happy with that,” Lowry said.

He added: “You need to shape it around the fairway, hit it off the tee, and it’s all about your iron game. That’s one of my strengths and I took advantage of that today and was able to hit some shots on the back nine, which is great.”

Lowry added that there had been a “little bit” of Ryder Cup conversation with playing partners Fleetwood and Donald.

“We could hear the horns from the road, and it wasn’t as annoying as Pete Page’s [Black] he said with a smile, referring to the hostile New York crowd at the Ryder Cup last month.

Fleetwood mixed in four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys to sit four shots back.

Donald, playing his first tournament since his second Ryder Cup success as captain, birdied five birdies and a bogey to match fellow Englishman Fleetwood and 2023 Open champion Brian Harman.

Playing with McIlroy, American Ryder Cup player Ben Griffin opened with a 68 while McIlroy’s European teammate Viktor Hovland signed with a 71.
