Tommy Fleetwood benefited from a massive stroke of luck on the final hole of his third round at the DP World India Championship to end the day two shots behind leader Keita Nakajima.
Overnight leader Fleetwood endured a frustrating nine-under performance at Delhi Golf Club, squandering a series of short putts as Japan’s Nakajima edged him out with a stunning round of seven-under-par 65.
Englishman Fleetwood was three down when he put his shot deep into the trees lining the 18th, but his ball bounced and he was able to finish with a putt and a putt for birdie.
The 34-year-old took it to 15-under 15 in his three rounds, while Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry moved back to third after also carding a 69.
Elsewhere, England’s Alex Fitzpatrick is vying for fourth place with 13 points under 67, while Rory McIlroy drops to 15th with 10 points under after 68 points.
Fleetwood stormed into the lead with an impressive eight-under 64 in the second round on Friday, but fell back from the frustrating number on Saturday when his putter froze.
He was under three on the day on the turn, but missed two six-foot putts on the back nine, then one from a similar distance on the 17th for par.
Nakajima made the most of his opportunity, making seven birdies and no bogeys, moving from fourth place overnight to leading the field at 17 under par.
Lowry, playing alongside Nakajima, also chased down the latter to stay within striking distance of the lead.
“Keita played fantastic today,” the Irishman told DP World Tour. “He will be tough to beat tomorrow, but there will be a few of us behind him and hopefully we can give him a chance.”
