The big-kicking fullback has never been closer to a call-up before, but he won’t let that change his approach.

“I got a call from Matt Sherratt and it was good to get some feedback,” said O’Brien, who will be encouraged after Ollie Cracknell wins his first cap at the age of 31 in the autumn.

He added: “Everyone wants to play for Wales and I am no different, but in the end my job is to do what I can with the Dragons.”

“I’m trying not to think it’s taken too much for Wales. That’s still a goal and I’d love to have the opportunity one day but I’m just focused on being the best I can to help us continue our momentum.”

The Dragons only have two players in the Wales squad – No.8 Aaron Wainwright and Luke Ben Carter – but their strong performances mean others are on the sidelines.

Winger or lock Ryan Woodman was invited to train with Steve Tandy’s side at the start of the week while winger Rio Dyer, scrum-half Chi Hope and hooker Brodie Coughlan were also contacted by the National coaching staff following their absence.

“Wales coaches have been around the clubs since Steve took over,” O’Brien said.

“All we can do is keep performing, winning and challenging each other – the better we do at the Dragons, the more players we will have in the mix for Wales.”
