“For the avoidance of doubt, this decision was in no way based on Ms. Byrne’s political views or beliefs, which she has freely and publicly expressed throughout her administration,” the Trivilla Group statement said.
“Instead, this decision follows a statement made regarding private discussions with club ownership.
“Not only did this cause a breakdown in the trust necessary for her to continue in her role as club manager, it also heightened the governance concerns that were the subject of those original discussions.”
Speaking after Trivela Group’s statement, Byrne told RTE, external The statement was “very emotional for me and very upsetting”, but it was “not surprising” as she confirmed she would not resign.
“This is nothing more than a formal written follow-up by the Trivilla Group to the meeting held on February 16 where my expectations were expressed to resign after I was told that my position as president was untenable. I stated at that point that I would not resign and that remains my position today,” she said.
He added: “I am under no illusions that this is only a result of my comments as Sinn Féin’s spokesperson for sport that the Ireland v Israel match should not take place, and I think people will see it for what it is.”
“I will now consider my options and go from there.”
Drogheda’s main sponsor, Sullivan & Lambie, issued a statement on social media last month showing its support for Byrne, and said it would “actively review” its position as sponsor, which it has held since the start of 2025.
