Tuesday’s KDM Evolution Trophy quarter-final between St Johnstone and Championship rivals Ayr United was postponed due to a flooded pitch, but the go-ahead was given for the League One clash between Montrose and Peterhead following a pitch inspection.
Aberdeen’s cup meeting with Motherwell at Pittodrie on Saturday evening was also cancelled, as was the league meeting with Celtic last Wednesday.
“The weather in north-east Scotland has seen unprecedented levels of rainfall throughout the recent winter months,” United says.
“This, combined with a busy home schedule and the club’s commitment to doing everything in its power to win matches, has put huge pressure on the pitch.
“A range of pitch protection measures were taken during this period. These measures were crucial in enabling the installations to continue through long periods of heavy rainfall.
“However, it had an unavoidable impact on the visual appearance of the playing surface.
“This was the necessary compromise to ensure continuity across an exceptionally demanding range of home installations during unusual weather conditions.”
