“We live in a world where everyone realizes how big a mental health problem it is,” Sharpley wrote on Instagram.
He added: “So, in football, why do we find it acceptable because these young people have a lot of money, and it’s okay to mess with their mental health and that’s just part of the job?
“We all deserve to be treated with respect, kindness and fairness. The last 48 hours have broken my heart seeing how the football world you love so much can be so cruel to you.
“To be promised something, to be dragged on an emotional roller coaster and to be manipulated until the last minute.
“To have that taken away from you at the last minute with no explanation at all — going from everything to radio silence, no phone call, no contact, leaving you heartbroken with nothing but confusion — is more painful than I can say.”
In a separate social media post, McNeil echoed Sharpley’s comments about the lack of communication and expressed his commitment to Everton.
“While I’m still in the dark so far… what I do know and get support from is that I am an Everton player. I will use this as motivation,” he wrote.
McNeil, who joined Everton from Burnley in July 2022, has not played regularly since David Moyes succeeded Sean Dyche, starting only seven of the 14 league matches he played this season.
