Jones said England’s sharp decline in form after a run of 12 straight wins was down to “emotional control”.

He added: “This is due to preparing for the match, driving on the field, or not having one or two players in the team in particular.”

“It could be any of these factors.”

The 66-year-old believes the solution lies in England’s leaders on and off the field pulling the team together, but he also urged Borthwick to reconsider his decision to field Henry Pollock from the start.

Northampton’s back row was included in the starting XV for the first time after seven adventurous cameos as a substitute.

While Pollock has produced some eye-catching moments, beating five defenders, winning a breakaway, making the sixth-most yards for the hosts and the most tackles of any England back-row, Jones believes he makes a greater impact in short bursts from the bench.

“For me, Bullock, if you come back, [former South Africa back row] “Bobby Skinstad — handsome, always tanned and can play,” Jones said.

“He’s one of those players who plays 20 minutes and finds himself in the right position, but he’s not a hard-working player.

“And to play 80 minutes in the back row you have to be ready for pressure. Maybe it’s not the best job for him.”
