Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior said he “didn’t want to offend anyone” when he and some teammates clashed with Barcelona players after Sunday’s El Clásico win.
The 25-year-old Brazilian striker expressed his frustration at being substituted in the 72nd minute and went straight into the tunnel.
He later returned to the bench and, after his side’s 2-1 win, attempted to tackle 18-year-old Barcelona winger Lamin Yamal during some nasty post-match scenes.
Vinicius was one of five players who received warnings for their role in the incident, while Real Madrid substitute goalkeeper Andriy Lunin received a red card.
“The Clásico is like this,” Vinicius told Real Madrid TV. “There are a lot of things happening on and off the field.
“We try to maintain balance, but it is not always possible. We did not want to offend anyone, neither the Barcelona players nor the fans.
“We know that when we get on the field, we have to defend our team, and that was the case today.”
Lamine Yamal angered Real Madrid players when he said last week that Real Madrid “steals” and “complains.”
After scoring the winning goal on Sunday at the Bernabéu, Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham said on Instagram:, external “Talk is cheap. Always Hala Madrid.”
