Elon Musk praises Mythos/Fable, promises not to ‘cut off’ Anthropy

Should Anthropic trust Elon Musk to host its models? After X users pointed out that Musk could one day wake up and simply run the AI ​​lab from SpaceX’s servers as a way to weaken the competitor, Musk responded with high praise for the AI ​​lab. Such a trick was “not my style,” he said.

“I was clearly wrong about Anthropic,” Musk wrote Thursday, referring to his September 2025 X post in which he said, “Winning was never in the set of possible outcomes for Anthropic.” Of course, even then, Anthropic could already be considered a winner; The company has been reported to have the largest AI market share with enterprises.

Those anti-humanity days appear to be behind Musk — and not just on the X. As of July 2026, Anthropic is one of SpaceX’s largest customers.

To recap: Anthropic signed a deal in May to buy 300 megawatts of compute, the entire output of xAI’s Colossus 1 data center near Memphis, Tennessee. (Musk’s xAI merged with SpaceX in February.) Anthropic agreed to pay $1.25 billion a month through May 2029, a deal worth about $40 billion in revenue for SpaceX’s xAI unit. Incidentally, Google also signed a deal to lease SpaceX’s infrastructure until June 2029, for $920 million per month.

Musk insists this was not a risky decision on Anthropic’s part and that he has great admiration for the competitor.

“It’s clear that they are currently the leader in AI. No company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable and they will undoubtedly have Mythos 2 ready soon. I would never interrupt them in a way that would hurt them badly, even as a competitor. That’s not my style.”

It was offered as evidence of a no-pressure approach to competitors by Tesla’s decision in 2014 (described in a now-deleted company blog post that is now included in the patent pledge) not to file patent lawsuits against anyone who wanted, in good faith, to use its technology. He also noted that Tesla has opened up its Supercharger network and charging port design to competitors.

“SpaceX launches competing satellite systems without overpricing or using unfair terms. Even my worst enemies can attack me on this platform,” he wrote, citing another example.

Of course, Musk is not above tactics targeting competitors, especially those he has a history with. He has sued OpenAI, for example.

However, one does not have to rely on Musk sticking to his “style.” There would certainly be contractual consequences if Musk suddenly shut down Anthropic’s infrastructure. Not to mention the huge benefits SpaceX will gain by keeping this deal intact. Not only is Anthropic paying big, but SpaceX engineers may also learn how to build and support Anthropic’s fast-growing AI, just as Amazon engineers do.

This proximity may have other benefits as well. During his trial against OpenAI, Musk acknowledged that AI “distillation” was real — a process in which a modeler sets up several fake accounts to send claims to a competitor to learn how it works. As the New York Times reported, when a lawyer asked him whether XAI had extracted technology from OpenAI, Musk responded: “Generally speaking, AI companies extract other AI companies.”

In February, Anthropic accused three Chinese model makers of doing this to Claude. Presumably, Anthropic and Google feel they have safeguards against SpaceX doing this while using their infrastructure. But hosting Anthropic’s computing could still give SpaceX greater insight into how the company operates than most competitors might get.

There seems to be only upside for Musk in this partnership at the moment. As for tomorrow, with the contract advancing by three years, who knows?
