British Emma Raducano defeated sixth seed Amanda Anisimova in the Indian Wells tournament, losing 6-1, 6-1 in a third-round match that lasted only 52 minutes.
In an ominous sign of the struggle to come, Raducano was broken in the opening bout.
It quickly became clear that the 25th seed had no answer to the American’s assertive style, and she prevailed in the first set by winning just 11 points.
The second immediately took on a similar pattern as Raducanu found herself three games down before she was able to hold serve.
After appointing Mark Pechey as interim coach following his split from Francisco Roig in January, Raducano said last week that she was hoping to rediscover her “natural way of playing” in an attempt to build towards the form that saw her win the 2021 US Open.
But there was no reprieve, with Anisimova impressively needing three more matches to qualify.
The performance represented a stark contrast to the second-round match that Raducanu achieved, with her comprehensive 6-1, 6-3 victory over Russian Anastasia Zakharova.
Speaking in court afterwards, Anisimova said she was “just trying to go out and have fun” and “be brave”.
