📌 Main takeaway:

Beever-Jones posed a threat against Australia almost immediately as she was inches away from getting on the end of a Beth Mead cross after just three minutes.

She was offside when she fouled goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold minutes later, but finally scored when Rousseau was brought down by Alana Kennedy – the Australian defender who received a red card – and Beaver-Jones scored from the resulting free-kick.

The 22-year-old continued to cause problems before she was forced off prematurely, suffering a knock with less than 10 minutes remaining.

“She was very intelligent. She would make really good runs and make herself uncomfortable,” former England defender Anita Asante told ITV.

“She was also asking Sarina questions because I’m sure she wants to play every minute she can for England,” he added.

Beaver-Jones played just 74 minutes during her success in Switzerland, coming off the bench twice and starting once – an experience that taught her how to deal with the disappointment of not being selected and how to manage those emotions.

“I always believe in timing,” she told BBC Radio 5 Live. “When I look at the European Championships, I wish I could play more, I wish I could help more.”

“But for me, once it was over, I thought, ‘OK, go back to my club, smash it, do what you can do and go fast.’”

Beaver-Jones did just that and scored four goals in six Women’s Football League matches, leading to many calling for her to start in this week’s friendlies.

She played 27 minutes as a second-half substitute in Saturday’s loss to Brazil, but Wegman gave her the chance wide against Australia and she was pleased with what she saw.

“[Beever-Jones and Russo] They’ve played together before. “I think we have three players who can play at centre-forward, and all three are very good and different,” Wegman said.

“Aggie can also play on both sides. That’s what you saw today, she’s very agile and quick with the ball which can help the team.”

His Chelsea teammate Eli Carpenter was part of the opposition’s backline and was aware of the Beaver Jones threat.

It is Chelsea’s usual ninth-place finish with Australian striker Sam Kerr continuing to return to full fitness and Mayra Ramirez injured.

Former England striker Ian Wright told ITV that Beaver-Jones has the “right attitude” by seizing her opportunities and waiting patiently for them.

Carpenter, her club colleague, added: “She can play as a striker and also on the flanks. She has all the qualities that qualify her to be a world-class striker.”

“She’s difficult to defend against. I’m happy for her because she got more minutes tonight and showed why she can be a key player for England.”
