Little separated the two sides in a lively first quarter, which ended with the Silver Ferns leading 13-12.

Seeking to strengthen its advantage in the second quarter, New Zealand advanced by four goals. England fought back despite still being outscored 16-15 in the second half to trail by two goals at the halfway stage.

But they turned things around in the third quarter, which they ended confidently with a 46-42 lead.

The Roses kept up the pressure this time around, faltering after their impressive third-quarter performance against the Silver Ferns on Saturday. Another steal, this one by Housby, brought England coach Jess Thirlby to his feet, and this time, the attack ended with a Cheney goal.

With 13 seconds left in the game, Housby scored the final goal of the game, sparking cheers from the home team fans that continued until the buzzer.

“This is the quietest I’ve ever seen a game in this vein,” Thirlby said.

“We were better physically and mentally today in the moments we needed to.

“It wasn’t without its challenges, but the fight and the way they supported each other in those final stages was very impressive.”

Wednesday’s match will conclude a series that forms part of both sides’ preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which take place during July and August next year.
