England squad: James Garner and Jason Steele have been named by Thomas Tuchel in the England squad

Thomas Tuchel said the upcoming England camp is the “last chance for players to fight their ticket” to the World Cup this summer, as he named an expanded 35-player squad.

It included two players who had never played before, including Everton midfielder James Garner and Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele.

The expanded squad saw the recall of Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Kobe Maino, while Milan defender Fikayo Tomori returned for the first time since October 2023.

Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin returns more than five years since his last call-up, with Dominic Solanke making his first squad since October 2024.

But there is no room in Tuchel’s squad for Real Madrid full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott. Or Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

Chelsea players Reece James and Trevo Chalupa, who were named in the final squad, will miss the match due to injury.

The Three Lions team continues its preparations for the World Cup by holding friendly matches at Wembley Stadium against Uruguay on March 27 and Japan on March 31.

“It’s our last camp [before the World Cup]. “The last chance to impress and the last chance for the players to compete for their ticket,” Tuchel said.

Tuchel said that “to get the best out of this camp”, the decision was made to split it into two camps, with 11 players joining the squad after the Uruguay match.

The 11 players are: Dean Henderson, Dan Byrne, Mark Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Nico O’Reilly, Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, and Bukayo Saka.

“These guys played 3,500 minutes, or about 4,000 minutes,” Tuchel said. “More important than the number of minutes is that some of these players played more minutes than the entire last season.”

“All these players contributed in September, October and November. Credit to them. To give them a mental and physical break, we will take advantage of that.”

Teams must submit their final World Cup squads by Saturday, May 30.
