Twenty years separate Lucas Friday and Danny Kerr.
The 39-year-old former Harlequins scrum-half caretaker has played 101 times for England and featured against Exeter Chiefs to mark his 395th and final appearance for the club last May.
Rather than sign an experienced player, Quins opted to bring in teenager Friday – who at that stage only had three minutes of top-grade rugby under his belt.
But it was a fitting pass for the keeper as Mike Friday – Lucas’s father and former England sevens coach – played a key role in Kjaer’s early career development.
“It feels like a full circle moment, as Lucas’s father, Mike, was my mentor from the age of 16 to 20 on the National Junior Academy pathway and he selected me to play in the England Sevens,” Kerr told BBC Sport.
“Mike used to come over and do a lot of passing and kicking drills with me. He passed on his knowledge to me. Fast forward 20 years, and I was doing the same with his son.
“It was a bit weird but in a nice way, passing the torch. It was good to be able to help because this guy’s dad gave me so much.
“In a cathartic way, it played a small factor in my retirement because I knew you had to let this baby fly now.”
Small in stature but extremely quick with a quick pass, the 19-year-old reminds Kerr of himself as a promising teenager.
The talent was undeniable, but Friday’s willingness to learn shone through as he waited until the first practice was over before taking to the field for additional kicking drills.
“After the sessions they may not have wanted to do it, or maybe they had other things to do, but they did it [Harlequins senior scrum-halves Care and Will Porter] “I took time to help with my development,” he told BBC Sport on Friday.
“I always wanted to ask questions, and once they got back with me, it gave me more confidence. Maybe they weren’t too happy with the amount I asked.
“It will be technical questions about passing and what went well for him [Care] And it didn’t go well.
“Kicking technique is another thing and finding that consistency.
“I want to be the best I can at every skill, and I want to master it and master it.”
