British tennis player Emma Raducano and Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Horzler were guests at a men’s rugby union training camp in England this week.
Speaking before facing New Zealand at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, coach Steve Borthwick said the duo’s presence was so they could talk to his players and help exchange experiences with them.
Raducano was the youngest player to win a Grand Slam title in 17 years when she won the 2021 US Open, while German Horzler is the youngest permanent coach in Premier League history.
“We had Fabian Horzler, the Brighton coach. He was great in sharing his experiences and spoke to the team this morning and was fantastic,” Borthwick said.
“Emma visited Raducano today, visiting elite athletes like Emma Raducano and sharing her experiences with the female athletes, her preparations for sport and international competitions at the highest level is always a learning experience.
“We are so grateful she came to visit us and with her supplies, it has been a good week so far.”
Borthwick felt that in Raducano’s case, she was able to share her unique individual tennis experiences which he felt could help his team more accustomed to team sports.
Borthwick added: “I think the players were journalists just talking about the contradiction between individual preparation and the need to feel that everything is fine, and for a tennis player who is alone on the court, individual preparation is everything.”
“For a team sport member, it always gets that balance but we still need to maximize that individual preparation.”
In addition to the duo, former England players Chris Ashton, Marco Vunipola and Danny Kerr visited the England squad this week.
“Fortunately, we have the opportunity sometimes to have people like we have this week and look at them as learning experiences.
“I think part of developing this team is adding levels of experience and adding reference points and conversations we’ve had and lessons we’ve captured that we can look back on in the future.
“All these experiences coming back to our camp and sharing them with us are important for our development.”
