Ethical Diamond came through with a stunning late run to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf in a record run for Grand National-winning trainer Willie Mullins.

The 20-1 prospect, who spent most of his early career jumping hurdles, rode on the outside under Dylan Brown McMonagle to claim one of Flat Racing’s biggest races, with more than £2 million going to the winner at Del Mar in California.

Ethical Diamond, winner of the Ebor Handicap at York in August, edged away from runner-up Rebel’s Romance and third-placed El Cordobes, with favorite Minnie Hawk no longer.

It’s the latest milestone in the impressive career of Mullins, best known as the jump racing coach who won the national championship with Nick Rockett in April.

“This would come second to winning the Grand National with my son Patrick on board,” said Mullins, 69. “I couldn’t believe it.”

Newly crowned Irish champion McMonagle, 22, said: “It’s an unbelievable training performance. It can’t get much bigger than this.”

The owners, HOS Syndicate, are hoping to complete a major race double with Absurde racing in the Melbourne Cup for Mullins on Tuesday (04:00 GMT).
