Roma striker Evan Ferguson will miss the Republic of Ireland World Cup qualifier after being ruled out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

Ferguson’s loan spell at Roma is also likely to end early and he will return to parent club Brighton & Hove Albion to undergo surgery.

The 21-year-old scored five goals in 22 appearances for the Serie A club, but his season has been marred by a number of injuries.

“It is now clear that he will finish the season here and will undergo surgery on his ankle, and he will not have time to recover even at the end of the season,” Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini said before the Genoa match on Sunday.

The Republic of Ireland face the Czech Republic on March 26 in the semi-final and either Denmark or North Macedonia in the final if they win in Prague.

Ferguson scored three goals for Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side in the qualifiers, but missed the win over Portugal and the dramatic last-gasp victory over Hungary that sealed the team’s qualification due to injury.

If the Republic of Ireland qualifies for the World Cup for the first time since 2002, it will be in Group A with Mexico, South Korea and South Africa.
