The trial, scheduled for midday, did not begin until 1:30 local time and ended at 15:00.

Given the large number of people involved – more than 140 defendants and 220 witnesses – the trial is not taking place in a courtroom, but in a specially designed room next to the high-security Korydallos prison, in southern Attica.

Lawyers have requested a larger courtroom, which judges will next consider later this month.

The court consists of three members – there are three senior judges who will rule by majority.

The defendants are fans facing trial on charges of participating in a criminal organization related to a 2023 riotous incident in the port city of Piraeus, which allegedly led to the death of a police officer.

Early Wednesday morning, police closed the street outside the building. Some Olympiacos fans gathered, but there was no organized rally to show support for the accused.

Police procedures were very strict, with the identity of everyone entering the courtroom checked and a metal detector used to check backpacks. There are separate entries for lawyers, witnesses in the trial and journalists. A temporary media center was set up in an adjacent room.

The trial began in complete silence as the judges ascended to the court podium and requested the presence of the accused. The names of the accused and witnesses were read out. The police officers were wearing hoods and were heavily armed.

The next hearing is scheduled for November 25.
