Everton sacks coach Brian Sorensen days after their first home win of the Premier League season

The timing of Everton’s decision comes as a surprise, just hours after the transfer deadline closed and Roma midfielder Zara Karamzar joined their ranks.

Sorensen has been involved in the recruiting process and many of the additions made over the past two windows fit his calling.

But the feeling of the need for a change of direction has been present at Everton for several months.

His experimental style has been effective before and he should be commended for his management last season when Everton’s injury crisis left a weakened squad amid a time when the club was waiting to complete the Friedkin Group takeover.

However, expectations rose this year when investments came in, signings were made and the team was good enough to challenge at the top of the table.

They have been dragged into an unnecessary relegation battle and Everton now act in the hope that they can do enough to stabilize their position before rebuilding in the summer.

Sorensen’s overall time at Everton demonstrated his abilities as a coach, but the inability to put together a consistent team hurt his progress.
