The clash against a side ranked 36th below the Magpies in the English football pyramid will be Patterson’s first as coach in the FA Cup.

He was assistant to Michael Duff at Huddersfield Town last season when the League One side were knocked out of the competition by National League side Tamworth.

Paterson City know that at this stage of the competition, as a one-time cup winner – 131 years ago in 1894 – Notts are viewed as a major scalper.

“Obviously we have history, we won it a long time ago and it is a proud memory for the club,” he said.

“I think everyone looks at Notts County as a really good club, especially at League Two level and they are traditionally the oldest professional football club, so I imagine it appears to others that we are a target.

“But I prepared for it. There are no excuses from me regarding being a goal. At the end of the day, it’s a football match, and we don’t prepare any differently.”

“I don’t want anything more or less from my players, I just want the same thing they were doing last month, which is to continue competing and improving.”

Notts won three of their four unbeaten league matches in October to move up to fifth in League Two, two points off the top.

Patterson said: “I’m proud to be here as Notts County coach and I know the responsibility I have as well.”

“That’s why people sometimes see me as a sharp and angry person, even when we win.

“It’s just understanding how important it is to not let our standards slip and we have to keep improving this group and I need to keep improving.”
