Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry said he “won’t worry” about the integrity of the NBA despite an FBI investigation into illegal sports betting.
Miami Heat player Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups are among dozens arrested as part of a sweeping investigation that also includes alleged mafia-linked poker games.
Rozier and Billups were named by federal prosecutors in separate indictments Thursday. Both men deny these accusations.
Rozier, 31, is among six people arrested over alleged betting irregularities. Among them are NBA players accused of faking injuries to influence gambling markets.
There is greater concern about gambling’s impact on the integrity of American sports, as most US states have legalized sports betting since the US Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018.
βI think in general everyone is very aware of what to do and what not to do, and they understand the landscape of sports now in general,β said Curry, a two-time NBA MVP.
“And this isn’t just an NBA thing, this is new territory for everyone. So I think, in general, we’re all very responsible.”
“The integrity of the game is good and obviously we let the situation develop no matter what. But I wouldn’t worry about that too much.”
“I’m devastated,” said Warriors teammate Draymond Green, who won four NBA titles with Curry. “It’s a tough moment for the individuals involved, a tough moment for the league.”
“But I’m not going to sit here and say, ‘Man, you’re all partners in a gambling company, open a can of worms.’ This can of worms can be opened in partnership with gambling companies or not.
“Partnering with a gambling company will not make gambling more accessible to us. Accessibility is what it is.”
