The fear and Gibson’s uniqueness is present in their routine. In addition to the Spice Girls set, their free show pays homage to Gibson’s Scottish roots with a mix of “The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond”, “Auld Lang Syne” and The Proclaimers’ song “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”. They worked with highland dancing experts to perfect the choreography.
“They strike!” Fear said about their musical tastes. “We started the season with a slower medium, but changed it into an upbeat piece – they are a crowd favourite.”
They’re also not afraid to take on the ice skating mold on the ice. Gibson, who is gay, told the Europeans conference that he would like to see same-sex partnerships allowed on the international stage at the event, adding his voice to the growing pro-change movement.
On the ice, they still have momentum. Since their 10th-place finish at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Fear and Gibson have won Great Britain’s first World Championships medal in more than 40 years, have been ranked No. 1 by FIFA after the 2024-25 season and have won continental medals at every opportunity.
“We’ve grown a lot since Beijing, and going into this season with the momentum we’ve built makes real sense,” Ver said.
“If you think back four years ago, the Olympics were a huge thing,” Gibson added. “It was during Covid so it was more intense – you just want to get there. Our biggest focus was just getting there and becoming Olympic champions but this time we don’t feel as much pressure.”
Then to Milan. Fear told their post-Sheffield press conference that they would travel to Italy on January 31 for a few days of training before the snowboarding team event – followed by their big chance for a medal.
“There’s a lot of respect amidst the fun camaraderie,” Cousins said. “They have their own lives, and that’s very important for people who work in such a tight environment.
“And there’s an amazing confidence — it’s not arrogance, it’s confidence, they carry that to the ice when others don’t.
“It’s great to see, but knowing how hard they’ve worked the last few years, all we hope is that they come off the ice in Milan happy. What the referees decide is up to them. There’s a chance [of a medal] “They should do their best and hope for the best.”
