3. Taunton Zulu Mukoko (Championship Manager 01-02)
“We went to a small village in Malaysia,” Tonton Zola Mukoko told me. “I gave my passport to the officer. He was shocked. “Are you really Tonton Zola Mukoko?” he asked. “You can’t be the one who was playing in Derby!”
The legend of Mokoko has traveled far and wide, being relayed to fan forums and whispered among tournament director Anurak. And there was truth at its roots.
Derby beat out AC Milan and Bologna to sign the 15-year-old from Djurgardens in Sweden, where he moved from the Democratic Republic of Congo to live with his brother after losing his parents.
He was a budding star at County’s academy, and his qualities in the game saw him grow into a skilled No. 10 in the mold of Lionel Messi, often ending up at Europe’s biggest clubs.
In real youth matches or reserve matches, fans would ask for his autograph. But Moukoko never appeared for Derby. The death of his older brother led to his return to Sweden, and he spent his career in the lower Scandinavian leagues.
He said: “Things happened around me that changed me a lot and changed my football career.” “I don’t really enjoy football anymore.
“I found it very difficult to sleep for a long time after my brother died. Football wasn’t the right thing for me after that.”
But Moukoko is happy that his legend lives on among those who signed him for the match: “I still have people calling me from Australia, France, everywhere.”
