Ireland’s World Cup of Hockey qualifying campaign got off to a flying start with a 5-2 win over Canada in Santiago.
Goals from Adam McAllister, Johnny Lynch, Jeremy Duncan and two goals from Lee Cole sealed the three points.
It was Canada that made a great start and won the first penalty kick, but goalkeeper Jimmy Carr was quick to thwart the opportunity.
At the other end, Matthew Nelson and Duncan both sent wide-ranging efforts in the first quarter.
Ireland grew into the game and broke the deadlock when McAllister’s low shot found the bottom corner.
Canada goalkeeper Ethan McTavish then made a good save to prevent a quick second goal when Ben Walk sent an effort towards goal.
In the second quarter, Ben Walker turned at the edge of the circle to find space and passed to Lynch, who converted the ball from close range to give his side a 2-0 lead at half-time.
Ireland continued their positive form after the restart and Walker remained lively and almost turned into provider for Greg Williams, but a smart save from McTavish denied him.
Williams assisted on Ireland’s third goal after finding Duncan, who pulled the ball through his legs and into the net.
Canada pulled one back early in the final quarter when Rowan Childs scored from a corner kick, but Ireland quickly canceled out the goal from a Cole corner kick.
Canada struck back as Jude Nicholson showed good finishing skill, but Cole added a penalty kick to seal Ireland’s success.
They will face Korea in their next qualifying match on Tuesday, March 14 (14.15 GMT).
