✅ Here’s what you’ll learn:

Mike Hannigan – Friends

In love, actually… Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) is married to Mike (Paul Rudd), with Joey (Matt LeBlanc) as Friends’ best man.

Mike Hannigan was the only character who really felt like the seventh friend. He was the perfect partner for Phoebe, acting as a lightning rod for her quirkiness and providing the strong family she never had before. It wasn’t just the fact that it was actor Paul Rudd that attracted viewers. His profile was nowhere near what he would later become, so audiences weren’t responding to his star power in the same way they did to, say, Bruce Willis, Tom Selleck, or Reese Witherspoon. Mike had to play the long game, lay the graft and earn Phoebe’s trust, winning our trust in the process. AJ, London

Ewan Roy – Succession

Counting late, coming into the fifth episode of Succession’s first season, my vote goes to Ewan Roy, Logan’s older brother, played flawlessly by James Cromwell. Ewan was an agitator for his ruthless younger brother, and his social and political conscience gave left-leaning viewers someone to root for. Anne, London

Ali – new girl

High expectations… Ali (Nasim Pedrad) and Winston (Lamorne Morris) in New Girl. Photo: Everett Collection/Alamy

Winston was already a great character, and adding a love interest for him in Season 4 was a great decision. Ali was smart, funny, and a perfect partner for Winston. On top of all that, it’s well fleshed out with a very strong cast, making you forget it wasn’t even there to begin with. Amy, Ulverston, Cumbria

Mother – How I Met Your Mother

I loved the mother in the final season of How I Met Your Mother. While many people hated the show’s ending, its introduction was what truly elevated the series finale. After eight series of build-ups, no one thought the show could deliver on its promise of this perfect partner for Ted. However, they overdelivered if anything, bringing in a character that all fans of the show fell in love with. He died, London

River Song – Doctor Who

Alex Kingston transformed Doctor Who – the series and Time Lord – as soon as she uttered the phrase “Hello, my dear” for the first time. Granted, she later tried to kill him, but there was a happy ending. Reader, I married him. Anil Patel, London

Kryten – red dwarf

Excellent one-liners…Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) in Red Dwarf. Photography: Wayne Ltd./Alamy

After first appearing as a one-off character in Season 2, Kryten was so great that the writers brought him back as a regular character. As a robot, Kryten can explain confusing situations to other crew members, but he can also go on remote missions. He’s given some excellent lines, one of my favorites being when he meets his future self, now wearing a wig: “What’s that you got on your head? I hope you have quarantine clearance for it.” Helen Taylor, Wokingham, Berkshire

Castiel – Supernatural

Castiel did not arrive on the show until season four. He was the angel who raised the dead Dean Winchester from hell and brought him back to life. Supernatural ran for 15 seasons, and Castiel became part of the team. For his actor, Misha Collins, going from guest star to main character was an amazing transformation — and it had to do with the actor and how he played the character. The first time we saw him he was a man wearing an open coat over a shirt and tie – and with huge wings silhouetted on the walls behind him. This image alone made Castiel into something new and wonderful that fit perfectly. Collins won us over without saying a word. Sarah Bewley, 72 years old Florida, United States

Lalo Salamanca – Better Call Saul

Gave the show a rush… Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) in Better Call Saul. Photography: Greg Lewis/AMC/Sony Pictures Television

For me, Better Call Saul was fading away after the first three seasons without much of a path in the Breaking Bad story until Lalo Salamanca arrived. Toco was involved previously as were Hector and Mike, but Lalo’s arrival gave BCS the boost it needed to persevere. Daniel Cogan, London

Jacqueline “Jack” Sloan – NCIS

I loved Maria Bello who played Jacqueline “Jack” Sloane on NCIS in seasons 15-18 as a senior special agent and executive psychologist who specializes in profiling. They gave her a backstory as a prisoner of war in Afghanistan who was tortured, allowing her to connect with people who had similar experiences. aline salyer, Michigan, USA

Lane Price – Mad Men

Great accuracy… Jared Harris as Lane Price and Christina Hendricks as Joan Holloway in Mad Men. Photo: Everett Collection/Alamy

Lane Pryce in Mad Men was an excellent addition to the already massive cast. His particular brand of 1960s Englishness was a shock to both the fictional company and the show, and his story was expertly plotted to its conclusion. Jared Harris was wonderfully accurate, and his office brawl with Pitt, sleeveless, according to Queensberry Rules, will remain one of television’s most surprising, tame, and funniest fight scenes. Just wonderful. son, Burgess Hill

Frank – It’s always sunny in Philadelphia

It’s hard to remember that the first series didn’t have Danny DeVito. Having such a sitcom legend on the show was a complete coup — his friendly relationship with his roommate and potential son Charlie was both warm and disgusting in equal measure. He’s filthy (or just filthy) rich, weird and heartless. The show would be worse without him. I, Glasgow

Lord Flashheart – Blackadder

Flash by name, Flash by nature! …Lord Flashheart (Rik Mayall) and Edmund Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson) in Blackadder. Image: BBC

Lord Flashheart (Rik Mayall) in Blackadder 2: “Flash by name, Flash by nature! Hello!” Okay, so this is the first episode and not the series finale, but there’s no denying that Mayall outshines his legendary colleagues when he literally arrives (and departs) with a bang at the end of the episode, taking Blackadder’s fiancée (Gabrielle Glaister) with him. Woof! Rob, London

Meg – Motherland

Meg (Tanya Moodie), who arrives in Season 2 of Motherland, snags the group at the school gates and doesn’t care. I love her because she’s funny and outrageous but vulnerable like all of us. She will definitely be one of my best friends. nicola boradelli, London

Ralph Cifaretto – soprano

Annoy everyone… Ralph (Joe Pantoliano), right, and Georgie (Frank Santorelli) in The Sopranos. Photography: Image 12/Global

Arriving with a threadbare moral compass, Ralph was the most outrageous and comical, yet fully realized character to arrive too late. The impact of his actions affected the show long after his exit. He upset everyone. But he was the greatest asset to Tony’s crew. He killed his pregnant mistress. He organized the murder of his partner’s son. Charming, but not witchy. A villain with a smile and the calmest bully, but distraught and vulnerable when his son dies. A domineering lover of toxic masculinity, but secretly needs to be sexually dominated by older women. A truly unforgettable character, The Sopranos gave the cruel and comedic oxygen for two long years. Ronnie, London

Sideshow Bob – The Simpsons

Absolutely perfect… Sideshow Bob (voiced by Kelsey Grammer) on The Simpsons. Photography: Cinema/International

I see your Frasier Crane and I raise you Sideshow Bob on The Simpsons, another Kelsey Grammer character who first appeared in a non-speaking part in the eighth episode of the first season. The Cape Feare episode is absolutely perfect — the Witness Protection Team’s impossible task of convincing Homer that he has a new surname — but all of his other appearances were standout episodes. Stephen Lally, Cumbernauld, Scotland
