Test time. Of the 62 teams that finished last season and started this season in the Premier League, who have won the most points in 2025 so far?

Surely it is Coventry? No, not even close. Should it be Bradford next? No. Wrexham? Don’t be afraid.

Birmingham’s 4-0 home win last week took their tally to 83 points and rising this year.

League One leaders Stockport are second on 78 points while minnows Charlton are third, a further three points behind, after their latest win over West Brom at The Valley on Tuesday.

In a world where Sunderland have jumped straight from the Championship play-offs into the top four of the Premier League, is it really that difficult to expect newly promoted teams to compete for the top spot in League One?

There was little pressure on Chris Davies less than a fortnight ago after a humbling 1-0 defeat at Bristol City, their fourth defeat in five away games without a goal scored.

However, they head to Middlesbrough on Saturday brimming with confidence, sitting just two points off the play-off places, and having scored as many goals in their past two games as they have in the previous 11 combined in all competitions.

The sixth aspect they’re chasing? That would be Charlton, who overcame a nervy League One play-offs last year, but arrived at the Championship like an adek to water, with just three defeats in their first 14 games, and the second-best defense in the league with just 11 goals.

That record will be tested on Saturday (15:00 GMT) when Nathan Jones returns home to visit Wrexham, a club he previously referred to as ‘the circus’ before falling back a bit, and Phil Parkinson wasn’t buying it.

The Red Dragons have also found their feet after promotion, losing just one of their past eight games and being unbeaten in four at home, inflicting a first defeat on leaders Coventry last time out at the Racecourse to help them secure five points outside the play-offs themselves.

Popcorn is ready, who can keep up with the tournament champions?
