An amateur footballer and NHS employee suffered a fractured skull after being attacked by a group of “more than 10 spectators” during a match in Liverpool.

Ormskirk West End Football Club said one of its players, Richard Agbasoga, was attacked about 20 minutes into the match against Calsea FC at Wavertree Sports Park on Saturday.

Team manager Chris Paul said Mr Agbasoga, an international nursing student from Ghana and temporary NHS employee, had permanent damage to his ear and was being tested for possible damage to his eyesight.

He said the “disgusting” attack followed a fight on the pitch between Mr Agbasoga and another player.

Merseyside Police have been contacted for comment, and Ball said the Football Association had launched an investigation.

While brawls between players were reasonably common, he said a “prolonged attack” by fans was an isolated incident.

“It was one of the worst incidents I’ve ever seen on a football field,” he said.

Mr. Agbasoga is not eligible for sick pay. A GoFundMe set up to support him during his recovery and to help with his medical costs has already raised more than £3,000.

Paul described Mr Agbasoga as a “lovely man” and a “gentle giant”.

“He is very shocked and very tired… but he is very encouraged and encouraged by the support he has received,” he said.

“As horrific as this incident is, it is rare…which is borne out by the amount of support Richard has received.”
