Formula 1 test: Isak Hadjar crashes new Red Bull in Barcelona in wet as McLaren waits until Wednesday

Red Bull driver Isaac Haggar was involved in a crash in wet conditions on the second day of Formula 1 pre-season testing in Barcelona.

The 21-year-old Frenchman, who has been promoted to Red Bull’s first team for 2026 after just one season in Formula 1, lost control at the fast final corner and crashed into the barriers.

The testing is being conducted privately with no access to independent media, and Red Bull did not respond to requests for comment on the incident.

But witnesses at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit say Hajjar was on his first lap on a set of medium tires having just switched from fully wet tyres.

The track was still wet and raining when he took off, spun and hit the barrier backwards.

“The conditions were very difficult this afternoon and it is very unfortunate that it ended this way, but it is part of the game,” team manager Laurent Mekes said.

He continued: “These difficulties came after a very, very positive day yesterday in terms of the number of laps that Isaac was able to complete in the car, and in terms of his learning and development and his reactions to the engineers.

“We will do our best to fix the car and see what comes next.”

Even then, Red Bull continued its encouraging progress on day one, with Max Verstappen having his first run in the car in the morning session.

The four-time champion stopped at Turn 5 on his first lap out of the pits but was able to rejoin.

Red Bull are only allowed one extra day under testing rules, having been off track on both days so far.

Weather forecasts indicate that Red Bull and Ferrari will only race on Tuesday, with the teams limited to three out of five days this week.
