Britain’s Luke Browning has been named Williams’ reserve driver for the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship season.
The 23-year-old Browning has impressed during the 2025 Formula 2 campaign, finishing fourth in the championship with Hitech GP after nine podium finishes and one victory.
This earned him the opportunity to be a backup to Williams’ main drivers Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz.
“I am very excited to be working as a reserve driver with the Atlassian Williams Formula 1 Team this year,” said Browning, who participated in some of the team’s practice and testing sessions last year.
“I look forward to working alongside Alex and Carlos to take the team forward in this new era of Formula 1.”
In addition to his reserve role, Browning will compete for the first time in the Japanese Super Formula Championship for Kondo Racing.
Williams team principal James Vowles said it was a “proud moment” to see Browning take up his new role in Formula One.
“He has made tremendous progress since joining the Williams Formula 1 Academy in 2023, supporting the team’s journey back to the front of the grid through his involvement in simulator and FP1 work,” Vowles said.
McLaren on Thursday announced the appointment of Leonardo Fornaroli and Pato Award as reserve drivers for 2026.
Fornaroli, 21, was the 2025 Formula 2 champion, becoming the Formula 3 and Formula 2 champion respectively.
