WASHINGTON (AP) — Pop singer Sabrina Carpenter and the publisher of beloved children’s character Franklin the Turtle are disavowing the Trump administration’s use of their music and images to advance its agenda.
In response to the use of her song “Juno” in a video depicting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids, Carpenter tweeted Tuesday: “This video is evil and disgusting. Never include me or my music for your inhumane agenda.”
In the caption of the clip, the White House quoted Carpenter’s words, “Have you ever tried this song? Bye.”
On Monday, Franklin’s publisher the Turtle Kids Can Press condemned Defense Minister Pete Hegseth’s post on X’s website displaying a doctored photo showing Franklin aiming a bazooka at boats. Hegseth posted the photo with the caption, “Franklin targets drug terrorists.”
“We strongly condemn any disgraceful, violent, or unauthorized use of Franklin’s name or likeness, which is in direct conflict with these values,” the publisher said in a tweet.
The Trump administration has launched multiple strikes in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean on small boats accused of transporting drugs in the region. More than 80 people have been killed in such attacks since early September.
There is a long list of performers and artists who have objected to the Trump administration’s use of their songs and copyright material, including ABBA, Bruce Springsteen, Olivia Rodrigo, Rihanna, Phil Collins, Pharrell, John Fogerty, Semisonic, Neil Young, Eddy Grant, Panic! At the Disco, REM, Guns N’ Roses, Celine Dion, Beyoncé and Adele.
