Felix Auger-Aliassime, who reached the semi-finals of the US Open twice, used his experience to overcome what might be a difficult encounter against Alejandro Tabello 6-3, 7-5, 6-1.
In theory, Chile’s Tableo should have been the most active of the competitors, spending around six fewer hours on the court last week after being eliminated in the second round.
But Canadian Auger-Aliassime started strong and broke serve at 3-1 before holding serve for the rest of the first set.
Tabelo had never gone beyond the third round at a Grand Slam but raised his game in the second round.
The 28-year-old, who celebrates his birthday on Tuesday, played aggressively from the baseline and it almost paid off as he looked to break a 5-4 deadlock.
But Auger-Aliassime raised his level, breaking his opponent’s serve to take a 6-5 lead and take the set to gain complete control.
Thapelo wilted in the third set and was broken three times, ending his hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals for the first time.
“Since I was 12 or 13 years old, it has always been a dream of mine to get this far,” Auger-Aliassime said.
“I am a French-speaking man – I can say that I am very, very happy to have your support and I hope to have your support until the end.”
