Berrettini’s only previous retirement from a Grand Slam match was at the 2023 US Open.
He also made an early exit from the 2021 ATP Tour Finals due to an abdominal injury, while last season he was forced to withdraw midway through matches in Madrid and Rome in the lead-up to the French Open.
But the former world number six, who missed the previous four French Open tournaments due to injury problems, is determined to take the positives from reaching the Grand Slam quarter-finals for the seventh time in his first appearance at Roland Garros since 2021.
“I have to accept the good things I did in this tournament, because a few weeks ago or a few days ago, it was crazy to think about me in the quarter-finals, so I will try to go home with a smile on my face,” he, who is now ranked 105th, added.
“It will be difficult, but this is how I like to approach these two weeks, and of course I am disappointed, I am sad, but I am also proud of the way I fought during this tournament.”
Speaking on the field after his win, Arnaldi said: “You never wish for someone to end a tournament like that.
“He had an amazing tournament. I’m sorry for him and I hope he recovers because soon he will be back on the grass and it will be very difficult to face him.”
Arnaldi, ranked 104th in the world, is the lowest-ranked player to reach a singles semifinal at the French Open since Philipp DeWolf did so in 1997 when he was ranked 122nd.
He will play another Italian, Flavio Coppoli, seeded 10th, on Friday for a place in the final on Sunday.
