📌 **What You’ll Learn**:
It’s the question on everyone’s lips. No, not “Why am I half a stone heavier and so in need of an afternoon nap?” But “Who is the secret traitor?” Fortunately, we’re about to find out.
The curveball’s new role has proven a game-changing development in BBC hit The Traitors. He wanders around Ardros Castle in a red cloak, in contrast to the traitors’ familiar green, and the identity of the secret traitor is unknown to contestants and viewers alike. Not only did it incite the tower of traitors’ paranoia, it empowered the audience to play at home, turning us all into armchair detectives as we tried to solve the case.
Now, thanks to the early removal of the treacherous bear Hugo, they will be revealed – perhaps sooner than the producers had planned. Saturday’s episode ended on a heart-wrenching cliffhanger, as the traitors were about to meet the mysterious puppet master for the first time. In Wednesday evening’s edition, we will see who is lurking under this crimson veil.
Here are the top 10 theories about who could be knocking on the secret meeting’s door…
Jekyll and Hyde Theory: Amanda
An early favorite with the bookies for the role of secret traitor was retired police detective Amanda. It’s easy to see why. She says she learned how to deceive from the criminals she encountered during her career and was eager to be a traitor: “I’ve tracked bad guys all my life. Now it’s time to be one of them.” Who better to hide? Amanda mentioned her training in covert techniques and police intelligence, so she has the skill set.
She also admitted: “My character in Jekyll and Hyde is my secret weapon.” The traitorous Rachel fears her and describes Amanda as “dangerously intelligent”. Do you remember her uncharacteristic hesitation during the mission of carrying the throne? This could have been Amanda guessing to herself and letting the mask slip. When Hugo was outmaneuvered, his last shot was to admit that Amanda was “better at this game than me.” This sowed the seeds of suspicion that it was a betrayal of traitor upon traitor. Did he attack her at the last minute?
Handwriting Theory: Jade, Roxy, Fiona, or Jessie
One of the few tangible clues is the scroll left in the tower, which lists options for the next murder. Maybe we shouldn’t read too much into it – her handwriting might be hidden or names could be rewritten by a member of the production team – but compare it to the round table panels and your senses might start to tingle.
Small, elegant cursive looks smooth and feminine, perhaps right-handed, and maybe even a little old-fashioned. The closest matches on the boards appear to be those belonging to Roxy, Fiona, and Jessie. However, the distinct “J” over James’ name on the scroll resembles Jade’s vote to remove Judy, which also brought her into the equation.
Slip of the Tongue Theory: Eli
Social media lit up on Saturday with fans convinced Ellie had accidentally turned herself in. During her post-roundtable interview, the 33-year-old said of her understated approach: “Being more reserved can help you in the beginning, but as the game goes on, people will wonder if you’re just sitting back and watching as some kind of secret traitor.” Claxon sound! Alert the authorities!
Was her statement just a coincidence? The traitors have already brought up Ellie’s name because she’s “so smart” but they don’t know half the name. As the first female psychologist to take part in the British series – although she has wisely concealed this information – who better to master the mind games involved in being a double agent?
Library Theory: Jesse
The night before the Royal Navy veteran, Ben, was killed, he expressed his suspicions about Ross and warned: “I will face death if any of you are traitors.” His name duly appeared on the hit list and he was murdered. In a rare event, the believers actually followed the clues and discovered who was within earshot in the library: Ellie, Jesse, James, Fiona, and Steven.
The latter is a traitor. James was shortlisted himself. That leaves all three women in the picture — including Hal’s hairstylist Jessie, who has slipped under most radars. Hugo briefly wondered if Jessie was the secret traitor because she was so relaxed before bed. She admits that people tend to underestimate her, but insists: “I have the ability to be brutal and back-stabbing.” Because of her stutter, Jessie may have felt more comfortable working alone. No one would see this coming.
The wolf’s clothing theory in sheep: Fiona
A Welsh woman getting in touch with her vulgar side as the ultimate disguise? It’s a description applied to traitorous Amanda in the first series and it might suit Fiona now. The Swansea singer admitted she was “pretending to be vulgar and ignorant” before ominously warning: “Never underestimate a woman of a certain age.” Watch how she teamed up with Amanda and Harriet to beat Hugo in the final round table. It was like Jane Tennyson in Miss Marple’s mask.
There are scraps of circumstantial evidence. Not only was Fiona’s handwriting in right field, but she was among the library trio in attendance when Ben put a target on his back. She “wasn’t interested” in getting an immunity shield during the Gallery mission. Rachel begins to suspect that Fiona is the secret traitor. And so do some viewers. She jokingly mentioned that she has a red bathing suit, but does she have a cape to match?
Female Theory: Jade
Since host Claudia Winkleman assigned the traitors of the second series the task of recruiting exclusively males, the producers have become strictly gender-conscious. Since the three traitors already chosen – Stephen, Rachel and the now-departed Hugo – were male-biased, it is likely that the fourth choice will be female to restore equality. In fact, when the secret traitor presented an all-male murder shortlist last week, the trio immediately agreed it had to be a woman.
This adds PhD student Jade to the list of possibilities. She is smart and strategic enough. She plays “a lot of social deception video games like The Traitors” and imagines she’s “a shark among sheep.” Could the cat be the new Burns?
Family Tree Theory: Roxy
The unnerving secret mission given to the surviving traitors last time was to leave bloodstained fingerprints on the framed family tree in the castle hallway, and nominate their fellow players for murder. Complete it successfully and they will finally be able to meet the secret traitor. But was the family tree’s starring role a clue?
Roxy and Judy came to the castle as secret mother and daughter. We’ve had secret parent-child relationships before (see Diane and Ross in series two) but one of the women being the secret traitor will add another level of intrigue. Roxy looked daggers at Gardener James when he mentioned Jody as a potential traitor, then rushed to place a coffin in his grave during the opening mission. His name duly appeared on the first shortlist. After watching her adoptive mother fall victim to her first deportation this year, there will be some satisfaction in seeing Roxy get revenge.
Crime Queen Theory: Harriet
A former criminal lawyer turned psychological thriller author, the role of secret traitor may have been created for best-selling author Harriet. She had “spent her life coming up with horrific ways to send people to the page”, so she was keen to “either commit murder or track down the killers in the game”. As the secret traitor, she can play both sides. In the latest episode of the companion show Uncloaked, eagle-eyed viewers spotted four framed photos on the wall: Hugo, Rachel, Stephen and Harriet. Why was she there with three known traitors?
Theory of Logic: All
Of the people not mentioned yet, we can rule out anyone who has appeared on the setlists, which would rule out Maz, James and Rhys. This leaves six younger males. Cocksure Sam hogged the camera time and made accusations. Rachel thought his boldness was a sign that Sam might be the secret traitor.
The remaining possibilities are builder Adam, little pup Faraz, personal trainer Jack, creative director Matt or the beleaguered Ross. Although let’s face it, any of these things would be disappointing with shades of Line of Duty’s failed Buckells.
Wild Card Theory: Claudia or Alan
It is highly unlikely that the secret traitor will come from outside the game’s borders, but the rules are there and must be broken. Presenter Winkleman is really the one pulling the strings. Could she have expanded her powers to include deceptive treason? The new look cape will coordinate well with her red fingerless gloves.
Another candidate from the left is anarchic comedian Alan Carr, winner of the inaugural Celebrity Series. The reigning champion starred in the first teaser for this civilian series, as he hands over his mantle and tells his successors: “You’ll never guess what Claudia has planned this time. It’s big. Good luck. You’ll definitely need it.” an idea? Probably not, but it would be fun if so.
