A fundraiser is underway for a footballer who was injured during the stabbing attack on a London-bound train on Saturday night.

The club told the BBC that Scunthorpe United player Jonathan Joshi “sustained non-life-threatening injuries” when he suffered a cut to his biceps.

Anthony Williams, 32, of no fixed abode, has been charged in connection with the incident.

Matt Ellis, from the Iron Bru podcast, said they have set up a fundraiser to help the player as he recovers from his injuries.

Mr Ellis said it was “absolutely horrific”.

He praised both Scunthorpe Utd fans and the wider football community for supporting the appeal.

Mr Ellis said the initial target was £2,000, but this was raised due to the “amazing” response.

The appeal raised more than £3,000 in around 24 hours.

“There’s always that kind of reassuring solidarity with Scunthorpe United fans if they know they can help out with a little something like this,” he said.

“We hope to get more that will help Jonathan on his road to recovery,” he added.

The 22-year-old defender, who also plays for North Lincolnshire side Botsford Town under dual registration rules in non-league football, signed for Scunthorpe in September after spending most of pre-season with the club.

Money raised from the fundraiser will go towards any adjustments that need to be made in the form of care, transportation costs and loss of earnings while he recovers from his injuries.

In an earlier statement, the National League side said: “Everyone at the club, from the board, management and teammates, along with all the staff behind the scenes, send our heartfelt wishes for Jonathan’s full recovery, which also extend to all the victims on board.”

Ironman manager Andy Butler described it as “a terrible thing to happen”.

“It hits close to home, it does,” he said.

“The club will support him every step of the way regarding his recovery.

“We just hope Jonathan feels okay.”
