Former England coach Sir Gareth Southgate said he was “concerned about unity” amid controversy over the flying of the St George’s flag.

An increasing number of St George’s and Union Flags have appeared across England in recent months.

While some people feel that raising the flag is patriotic, others see it as scary.

Southgate, who spent eight years coaching the Three Lions, resigned from his position as coach after the defeat in the Euro 2024 final against Spain.

Although he failed to win silverware with England, he is widely known for uniting the country in support of the national team and has now written a book called Dear England: Leadership Lessons.

On Monday, BBC Breakfast presenter John Kay asked Southgate what he thought of the debate over flags, saying: “Some people are proud of them. Some people question their use in certain circumstances. What do you think about discussing flags in the context of your opinion about patriotism?”

Southgate responded: “I’m worried about unity. You’ve seen what we’ve done with the team [England] To unite every community.

“I believe there is more that connects us all than that divides us. We should try to focus more on what unites us than what divides us.”
