Gary O’Neill agreed to become head coach of Strasbourg next Liam Rosenior He left the French club to join sister club Chelsea.

O’Neill, 42, has been without a club since being sacked by Wolves in December 2024.

He previously had a one-year spell at Bournemouth in the 2022-23 season, helping the south coast club avoid relegation before being sacked and replaced by Andoni Iraola.

His appointment in Strasbourg comes ahead of the French Cup match against third-tier Avranches on Saturday.

Strasbourg is owned by the same American group as Chelsea, and some fans have expressed their frustration with Rosenior’s departure.

The Strasbourg Supporters’ Union said in a statement: “The transfer of Liam Rosenior represents another humiliating step in Racing’s submission to Chelsea.”

“For two and a half years, we and others have been trying to raise the alarm about this.

“The problem goes far beyond the mid-season sporting influence and the ambitions of the young coach. It is structural – the future of French club football is at stake.”

In November, Strasbourg chairman Mark Keller argued that owners BlueCo had been positive for the club, investing more than £100m in the summer transfer window, as multiple club ownership has become a common reality in modern football. He pointed to the investment in the stadium, the women’s team and the academy.

Keller and new sporting director David Weir, who joined the French side after leaving Brighton in the summer, oversaw O’Neill’s appointment.
