General Motors announces new gas-powered Cadillacs amid electric vehicle withdrawal

DETROIT — GM New gas-powered Cadillacs will launch starting next spring, as the automaker continues to shift gears away from all-electric vehicles.

GM CEO Mary Barra said Tuesday that the next generation of Cadillac vehicles will include new versions of the company’s CT5 sedan, the old XT5 midsize SUV, and the discontinued XT6 three-row SUV.

“Starting next spring and continuing through 2028, we will launch the next generation Cadillac ICE [internal combustion engine] “Vehicles,” Barra said during the company’s second-quarter earnings call. The vehicles will be in addition to Cadillac’s existing all-electric crossovers and Escalade SUVs, it said.

New product announcements add to GM’s decline in electric vehicles. The automaker had planned for Cadillac to sell electric cars exclusively by the end of this decade. The company has also rolled back electric vehicle plans for other brands and increased production of gas engines, including V-8 offerings.

GM has posted EV-related charges of $10.9 billion since the second half of last year following slower-than-expected electric vehicle adoption as well as U.S. regulatory changes that eased emissions standards and eliminated EV subsidies.

Barra reiterated that GM’s plans include a “significant remanufacturing” of the automaker in Detroit starting next year, in part by expanding production of full-size SUVs to a Michigan plant that was previously slated to build electric vehicles.

The full-size SUVs – Escalade, Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL – are currently produced exclusively at the company’s Arlington Assembly Plant in Texas.
